About Mary Keister
For more than a decade, I have strengthened institutions of higher education and nonprofit organizations with values-driven strategic communications.
I excel at helping my clients connect the dots among their various goals and tying their aspirations to tangible actions that can be achieved through strategic communications.
My clients have included a range of colleges and universities — national and regional liberal arts colleges, STEM-focused institutions and R1 universities — as well as higher education associations and nonprofit organizations. I have developed and implemented strategies to help my clients share their stories in ways that creatively advance the narrative on important issues as well as support institutional priorities. I am skilled in managing complex, reputation-defining issues, particularly in the higher education sector.
My experience includes three and a half years with a national higher education communications consulting agency, where I advised senior leadership at client institutions, led the development and execution of crisis communications and issues management plans, and secured hundreds of national, local and trade media placements. Prior to my agency experience, I worked for nearly seven years in-house at Kenyon College, where I helped raise the public profile of the president, guided communications during crises, advised on social media, promoted faculty expertise, and advanced strategic priorities through media placements and in-house publications.
I am enthusiastic about working with institutions that expand access to knowledge and opportunity. I have experienced firsthand the power of these institutions to change lives. My time as a student at Beloit College transformed the way I viewed my own potential and empowered me to build a meaningful career. Every student, no matter their background or circumstance, should have this opportunity to engage in discovery about themselves and the world around them and to determine their own path in life. In service of this goal, I currently volunteer my time as a member of the PRSA Counselors to Higher Education Section Executive Committee.
Before indulging in my passion for higher education and strategic communications, I worked as a homepage producer with The Washington Post, where I learned to keep calm under pressure, sharpened my editing skills, and enjoyed indulging in many election night newsroom pizzas.
